Waterloo Station Masterplan Launched

Lambeth Council and Network Rail have worked with local partners, including South Bank BID and the BID's delivery agent, South Bank Employers' Group, to launch and develop an ambitious plan for the development of London Waterloo station and the surrounding South Bank and Waterloo area.

Waterloo Station is the third busiest transport hub in the country, and the primary gateway to South Bank's world class culture and tourism institutions, including the Southbank Centre, National Theatre, BFI, the Old Vic, and the London Eye.

Grimshaw Architects were commissioned by partners in 2022 to develop the Waterloo Station Masterplan, with the aim of creating a framework that would help realise the station's full potential as part of a connected, safe, and thriving net-zero neighbourhood. The BID helped fund the development of the masterplan, recognising how the creation and delivery of this framework is vital work for businesses, local communities and visitors alike.

The completed vision sets out a series of long-term aspirations to deliver improvements to both the station and the wider area that will make it easier and safer for people to move around, promote active travel and support the local economy.

Key improvements identified include:

  • Better connections, such as enhanced walking and cycling routes.

  • Enhanced bus and taxi interchange.

  • More green infrastructure.

  • Improvements to make the station easier to navigate.

Next Steps

Lambeth Council, Network Rail and partners will be working with our local businesses, residents and stakeholders to refine and develop these proposals as they are progressed.

The Council will invest £1.5million to further develop projects that can deliver key benefits in the short term, including improvements to the public space, connectivity and wayfinding, and promoting activation of underutilised spaces to support local communities and the local economy.
